Healthcare Missions to Guatemala

We helped support the visit in November, 2007 of the volunteer surgical team organized by the British Columbia-based organization Health for Humanity (H4H). For details of H4H's work in this and other years, visit their website.

We celebrate the commitment of H4H and other medical professionals who provide their services on a volunteer basis, and thereby improve the lives of thousands of individual Guatemalan patients each year.

Our desires for such programs, and others we would like to promote would be:

  • That they serve the interests of the neediest in rural and remote parts of the country. We applaud the work of Partner for Surgery, and their Guatemalan agent, Compañeros en Salud, who conduct triage sessions in rural Alta Verapaz to finds candidates for surgery by H4H and other international teams at the Obras Sociales del Hermano Pedro hospital in Antigua, Guatemala.
  • That they seek ways to include training and support to Guatemalan professionals and institutions.
  • That they think about expanding beyond surgery, e.g. to areas such as nursing and public health.
